Dear Chairman Legchog Zhuren:

I am writing to express grave concern about Phuntsok Nyidron, a Tibetan nun serving a 17- year prison sentence for her peaceful political activities. At the age of 24, Phuntsok was arrested, tortured and sentenced to nine years in prison for organizing a demonstration in which she and five other nuns chanted slogans and marched in a procession for a few minutes in Lhasa in 1989. In 1993, after recording Tibetan songs while in prison, Phuntsok's sentence was extended by eight years. Her 17-year sentence is one of the longest ever reported for female Tibetan political prisoners.

Phuntsok reportedly suffers from kidney problems and is in very poor health.

Phuntsok and other Chinese and Tibetan youths have been systematically tortured, detained without charge, and given prolonged sentences for peacefully expressing their political views. I urge you to make immediate and unconditional release of Phuntsok and other prisoners of conscience a priority, and to do everything possible to ensure that, at a minimum, she and other prisoners are given adequate medical treatment.

Thank you for your assistance and time on this matter.

Sincerely,
